Chains, Branches and Rings of Hydrocarbon In the earlier section, we mentioned the carbon compounds methane, ethane and propane, containing respectively 1, 2 and 3 carbon atoms. Such ‘chains’ of carbon atoms can contain many more carbon atoms. The names and structures of six of these are given in Table . Table – Formulae and structures …
Saturated and Unsaturated Carbon Compounds We have already seen the structure of methane. Another compound formed between carbon and hydrogen is ethane with a formula of C2H6 ..In order to arrive at the structure of simple carbon compounds, the first step is to link the carbon atoms together with a single bond (Fig. a) and …
Organic compoundsThe two characteristic features seen in carbon, that is, tetravalency and catenation, put together give rise to a large number of compounds. Many have the same non-carbon atom or group of atoms attached to different carbon chains. These compounds were initially extracted from natural substances and it was thought that these carboncompounds or organic …

We have seen the formation of covalent bonds by the sharing of electrons in various elements and compounds. We have also seen the structure of a simple carbon compound, methane. In the beginning of the Chapter, we saw how many things we use contain carbon. In fact, we ourselves are made up of carbon compounds. …
USES OF DIAMONDS People have always been attracted to beautiful, rare objects. Diamonds have been treasured as gemstones since ancient times, admired for their beauty, and people still think of diamonds as the ultimate luxury in jewellery. However, diamonds are valued for far more than their captivating beauty. Their unique physical properties make them prized …
The uses of graphite as below : i) It is used to making a pencil.ii) It is used to making as a dry lubricant.iii) It is used to making making electrodes.iv) It is used to making for polishing iron articles.v) It is used to making as a moderator in the nuclear furnace.
Solution In graphite, out of the four valence electrons in a carbon atom, only three are used for covalent bonding with the other three carbon and the fourth is relatively free and can move from one carbon atom to the other. These free electrons make graphite a good conductor of electricity.
In Graphite In a graphite molecule, one valence electron of each carbon atom remains free, due to the presence of a free electron; making graphite a good conductor of electricity. In diamond In diamond, they have no free mobile electron present in carbon atom. That is why diamond are bad conductor electricity.
