Q.(a) What is peristaltic movement? (b) ‘Stomata remain closed in desert plants during daytime’. How do they do photosynthesis? (Board Term I, 2013)

Solution :

(a) Peristaltic movement is the relaxing of the gut muscles to move the partially digested food throughout the alimentary canal downward.

(b) The stomata of desert plants open at night to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2). To stop water loss through transpiration, stomata are closed during the day. To continue photosynthesis during the day, they store the CO2 in their cells until the sun rises.
