CH 5 POLLINATION AND FERTILIZATION

When the man himself transfers pollen to the stigma.

Elephophily is the pollination facilitated by elephants.

In such flowers, the stigma and anthers grow at different heights which do not favour self-pollination.

In some flowers, the pollen of a flower cannot reach the stigma of the same flower.

This is the condition in which even if the stigma receives pollen from the anthers of the same flower, the pollen fails to undergo further growth.

The different times of maturation of androecium and gynoecium.

The flower may be either male or female and they may be borne on separate plants.

The disadvantage of cross-pollination are:- Some pollination agent is always needed which may or may not be available at the proper time. A lot of wastage of pollen.

The advantage of cross-pollination are:- The offsprings are healthier. The seeds produced are abundant and viable. New varieties may be produced by cross-pollination of two different varieties of the same species.

The transfer of pollen from anthers to the stigma of one plant to another plant of the same species.
