Prior to the 8th century, scholars say, the area around Puri was Buddhist. Along came Shankaracharya, whose goal was to make Hinduism flower in India again.
Puri was built in the 12th century by Anantavarman, the King of the Ganga dynasty. In 1230 CE, King Anangabhima III dedicated his empire to Lord Jagannath and identified himself as the deputy of the Lord. Gradually, the temple became an important centre of pilgrimage.
The Legend: One of the popular stories which is associated with it reveals why the hands and limbs of the Lord’s idols are unfinished. It is believed that in that King Indradyumna wanted to build a Vishnu temple but he wasn’t certain about the shape of the idol that would represent the Lord
This divine emotion is called mahabhava-prakasha. Mahabhava means the “highest form of emotions” and prakash means “manifestation.” Because of the spiritual ecstasy Krishna’s eyes became too big and hands and legs got absorbed in his body. This form of Krishna is called Jagannath.
Lord Jagannath is worshipped in different forms on different occasions. For example, he is frequently identified with Lord Shri Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. The idol of Lord Jagannath is made of wood, hence he’s identified with the Narasimha Avatar of Lord Vishnu who appeared from a wooden pillar.
Another assumption based on circumstantial evidence claims the ‘Brahma padartha’ inside idol of Sri Jagannath is shaligram and a Shri Gopal Yantra drawn on gold leaf. Idol of Sri Balabhadra does contain gold Shivalinga along with ‘Shaiva Yantra’ as ‘Brahma padartha’.
Ardhashosini is called Mausima (the mother’s sister) of Lord Jagannath. Mausima is a combination of two words, Mausi and Maa. In oriya language Mausi means Aunt and Maa means Goddess.
(“bina pada chale”, “bina aankh dekhe”, “bina kaan suney”). It was then that Tulsidas realised his folly and rushed back to Puri to find his Raghunath. This explains why Jagannath has no ears, no hands and no feet.
