The khandaThe khanda (Punjabi: ਖੰਡਾ, khaṇḍā) is the symbol of the Sikh faith which attained its current form around the 1930s during the Ghadar Movement.

Amrit is made from sugar water stirred with a sword. It is blessed and sprinkled on the hair and eyes. Amrit can be taken by men, women or children – like Taran and Joven. It is taken in the presence of five Khalsa Sikhs, and the holy scriptures, the Guru Granth Sahib.

Over the years, Sikhs for Justice has written public letters to the prime minister of Pakistan and the presidents of Russia and China, seeking their support against India and for the creation of an independent state of Khalistan in India’s Punjab state.

Jagjit Singh grew up in Tanda in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district, about 180 km from Chandigarh. He was a dentist. Chohan was first elected to the Punjab Assembly from the Tanda as a candidate of the Republican Party of India in 1967.

Langar is a community kitchen and, as part of it, free vegetarian food is served in the kitchens of a Gurdwara (a Sikh temple) every day. So although it’s Langar Week, it doesn’t just happen now. The aim of the next few days is to celebrate the practice and help more people understand what it is.

Nectar of the Sword One pyara pours clean water into the bowl and adds crystallized sugar. Another pyara holds onto the bowl with the left hand, grasps a double edged iron sword with the right hand, and stirs the sugar into the water while reciting one of five Amrit banis, or ceremonial prayers.

Guru NanakThere are currently about 24 million Sikhs worldwide. The majority live in the Indian state of Punjab. They regard Guru Nanak (1469–1539) as the founder of their faith and Guru Gobind Singh (1666–1708), the tenth Guru, as the Guru who formalised their religion.
