A popular subject in medieval Buddhist art is the Buddha preaching his first sermon in a deer forest at Sarnath, north of Bodhgaya, where he had experienced enlightenment some weeks prior.

Before we find out what was written in these inscriptions, let us see why his kingdom was called an empire.

Sarnath is a place located 10 kilometres north-east of Varanasi near the confluence of the Ganges and the Varuna rivers in Uttar Pradesh, India.

a group of nations or peoples ruled over by an emperor, empress, or other powerful sovereign or government: usually a territory of greater extent than a kingdom, as the former British Empire, French Empire, Russian Empire, Byzantine Empire, or Roman Empire. a government under an emperor or empress.

Emperors need more resources than kings because empires are larger than kingdoms, and need to be protected by big armies. So also they need a larger number of officials who collect taxes.

Among the inscriptions of Ashoka c. 3rd century BCE written in the Brahmi script a few numerals were found, which have come to be called the Brahmi numerals.

Rashtrapati Bhavan houses the magnificent third century B.C. sandstone capital of the Ashokan Pillar known as the Rampurva Bull. It gets the name from the site of its discovery, Rampurva in Bihar. The Rampurva Bull is mounted on a pedestal between the central pillars at the Forecourt entrance of the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

(‘Dhamma’ is the Prakrit word for the Sanskrit term ‘Dharma’).

In ancient India Dharma meant that which is imbibed, lived by – dhāretīti dhammam.
