An empire is a sovereign state made up of many countries or cultures that are ruled by a single individual, usually an emperor or empress. A kingdom is made up of land from the same region or territory that is ruled by a king or queen.

Harshavardhana became the ruler of Thanesar after both his father arid elder brother died. He took over the kingdom of Kanauj after his brother-in-law was killed by the ruler of Bengal. Harsha led an army against the ruler of Bengal. He got success in the east and conquered both Magadha and Bengal.
The changes that can be found in the army of this time are: Kings maintained a well-organised army, with elephants, chariots, cavalry and foot soldiers. They had an advanced range of weapons. There were military leaders who provided the king with troops whenever he needed them.
