Volcanoes are dangerous. They can kill people and damage property. Economic activity can suffer as it is hard for businesses to operate after an eruption. Habitats and landscapes are damaged by lava flows.

Ash’s abrasive particles can scratch the surface of the skin and eyes, causing discomfort and inflammation. If inhaled, volcanic ash can cause breathing problems and damage the lungs. Inhaling large amounts of ash and volcanic gases can cause a person to suffocate.

Stay away from ashfall areas, if possible. Avoid contact with ash as much as you can. Keep your skin covered to avoid irritation from contact with ash. Wear goggles to protect your eyes from ash.

‘ Lava Flows Lava is molten rock that is spewed out by an erupting volcano. Lava can be very fluid or very viscous. Although lava generally moves at a slow speed, fluid lava flows can kill as they move fast and incinerate everything that it touches.

Kilauea – in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park – is the most active of the five volcanoes that form the Hawaiian islands. Its most recent eruption began December 20, 2020, around 9:30 p.m. local time (7:30 UTC on Monday).
