Each great circle is divided by the poles into two semi-circles called meridians of longitude. As the meridians run north and south, places having the same longitude will be due or due south of each other.

There are 90 latitude lines between equator and north pole and 90 more between equator and south pole. The equator is at the exact centre between the poles and is the 0°th latitude line.

In total, there are 12 meridians on each side of the body: 3 yin meridians (heart, lung, and pericardium) and 3 yang meridians (small intestine, large intestine, and sanjiao) of the arm, 3 yin meridians (liver, kidney, spleen) and 3 yang meridians (urinary bladder, gall bladder, and stomach) of the leg.
