Most nodules under 1cm are benign. If you first feel a small nodule that quickly grows to exceed the 1cm measurement, it could indicate something serious. Larger nodules and fast growing nodules can indicate malignancy, or thyroid cancer.
Older people with a nodule that produces too much thyroid hormone may have only vague symptoms, including: Fatigue.
The only way to definitively determine if a thyroid nodule is cancerous is to examine it under a microscope. The most common method is called fine need aspiration (FNA) biopsy, where a very small needle is inserted into the thyroid nodule and cells are removed for microscopic examination.

Nodules between 6 mm and 10 mm need to be carefully assessed. Nodules greater than 10 mm in diameter should be biopsied or removed due to the 80 percent probability that they are malignant. Nodules greater than 3 cm are referred to as lung masses.
Tumors that are generally larger than three centimeters (1.2 inches) are called masses. If your tumor is three centimeters or less in diameter, it’s commonly called a nodule.
