A thing acquired by violence can be retained only by truth. The Indians in South Africa, therefore, can ensure their safety today if they can wield the weapon of Satyagraha. There are no such miraculous properties in Satyagraha, that a thing acquired by truth could be retained even when truth was given up.

Gandhi’s satyagraha was an act of moral creativity. For Gandhi, satyagraha was not only a political weapon but a weapon of creativity. Satyagraha is a means of establishing faith inhuman beings as also in God. The philosophy of satyagraha holds that every human being is capable of doing well and thinking good.
According to Gandhi, the main objective of Satyagraha was to eradicate the evil or to reform the opponent. In the present socio-economic political system, there is a dire necessity to wean the individual away from the influence of wealth, luxuries and power.
The theory of satyagraha sees means and ends as inseparable obtain an end are wrapped up in and attached to that end. Therefore, it is contradictory to try to use unjust means to obtain justice or to try to use violence to obtain peace. As Gandhi wrote: “They say, ‘means are, after all, means’.
By giving the concept of Satyagraha, Gandhiji showed mankind to win over greed and fear by love. In this principle of non-violence, Mahatma Gandhi introduced the technique of resistance to evil and untruth. His Satyagraha was inspired by boundless love and compassion.
The concept of satyagraha is built on three basic tenets — satya, ahimsa and tapasya. Satya, or truth, implies openness, honesty and fairness. Ahimsa means refusal to inflict injury on others. Tapasya conveys willingness for self-sacrifice and patience

The British Colonial Government passed the Rowlatt Act which gave powers to the police to arrest any person without any reason. The purpose of the Act was to curb the growing nationalist upsurge in the country. Mahatma Gandhi called upon the people to perform satyagraha against the act.
